Tangent Scale Models announces the availability today of our latest all-new HO Scale model: The Pullman-Standard PS-2 3215cf Covered Hopper. While models of this car have been produced in the past, it has not been available in decades, and certainly not with the “Tangent Treatment!” We are very excited to bring you this highly-relevant – and needed – prototype model in HO Scale – in a high quality form!

No preorders. No waiting. These cars are available right now.

In the early 1960s, railcar builders experimented with new covered hopper designs to help railroads move away from generic forty-foot box cars to special-duty bulk transport railcars. Pullman created the “PS-2” series of covered hoppers which included more than 20 individual designs that were larger in capacity with time, and the 3215/3219 was the second “three bay” design produced. Pullman’s most significant innovation with the PS-2 designs was taking advantage of gravity, where lading was loaded through the round hatches on the roof, and unloaded via gravity from the bottom outlets. The PS-2 3215/3219 design was produced between 1958-1962, and production ended after delivery of more than 1,400 cars.

Our April 2025 debut of the Pullman-Standard PS-2 3215cf Covered Hopper includes eight (8) railroad schemes, plus three (3) RTR undecorated kit options.

– Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe (ATSF) “Delivery Gray 11-1959 GA-119” replicates the 100 cars of Santa Fe’s second 1959 order of Pullman-Standard Covered Hoppers. ATSF ordered a total of 405 PS3215cf covered hoppers, which should be no surprise since ATSF was a prolific buyer of Pullman covered hopper products. ATSF also happens to be the largest fleet owner of this car type. The Tangent model replicates the delivery “gray” scheme, which includes the famous circle-cross logo. The models feature a see-through Apex-style running board (straight and flat!), “Early-style” round roof hatches, body-mounted brake gear and Enterprise gravity outlet gates. All of these features match the prototype ATSF cars. The B-end of the car features all of the brake details and piping of the prototype, including a gorgeous Universal brake stand, modern brake wheel, Apex-style brake step, high-mounted retainer valve, wire piping details and a finely executed air release rod poking through the bottom sill on each side of the carbody. Metal corner stirrup steps and flexible rubber air hoses on each end of the car provide durability. These cars ride on our brand-new 70-Ton ASF A-3 Ride Control Roller Bearing trucks with Timken rotating bearing caps! These sharp ATSF models are available in 12 numbers. SKU 35010

– Great Northern (GN) “Delivery Gray 2-1960” shows off the classic Great Northern slanted lettering with the red and black “rocky” logo, across a gray-painted body – the correct color of course. Stenciled “For Food Products Only” these cars served the GN systemwide, as well as successor BN hauling all sorts of commodities, including grains, sand, and fertilizers. Every piece of data is carefully replicated, something you have come to expect with Tangent. The models feature correct GN roof details like a see-through Apex-style running board and “Early-style” round roof hatches. Underneath, the model includes exquisite Enterprise gravity outlet gates, matching this prototype group of 65 cars. The B-end of the car features all of the brake details and piping of the prototype, including a gorgeous Universal 7400 brake stand, Universal brake wheel, Apex-style brake step, wire piping details and a finely executed Retaining Valve mounted on the end of the carbody. Metal corner stirrup steps and flexible rubber air hoses on each end of the car provide durability. Finally, these cars ride on our brand-new 70-Ton ASF A-3 Ride Control Roller Bearing trucks with Timken rotating bearing caps! They are gorgeous! These cars are available in 12 numbers. SKU 35011

– Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway (M&StL) “Delivery Gray 11-1958” shows us another classic gray painted PS-2 3215. The M&StL graphics are carefully duplicated on the car, from the memorable M&StL logo, the spelled-out “Minneapolis & St. Louis” lettering inside the white rectangle, and the “Serving the Grain Industry” lettering all in capital letters! Neat stuff! These cars were acquired so M&StL could expand away from 40 foot box cars for grain services. M&StL was a grain- and other commodity hauling railroad that had a primary trunk that served the breadbasket states of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. These M&StL cars feature Apex-style running board and “Early-style” round roof hatches. The B-end of the car features all of the brake details and piping of the prototype, including a gorgeous Universal 7400 brake stand, Universal brake wheel, Apex-style brake step, wire piping details and a finely executed Retaining Valve mounted on the end of the carbody. This M&StL replica rides on the Tangent 70-ton ASF Ride Control Plain Bearing truck. The three bays are equipped with an earlier style of Enterprise discharge gates, with the support straps attaching to the rear “L” channel. Metal corner stirrup steps and flexible rubber air hoses on each end of the car provide durability. These models are available with November 1958 dates. It isn’t often that you get an M&StL-specific railcar. Also, this is the first time Tangent has released a railcar in original M&StL paint! SKU 35012

– Norfolk & Western (NW) “Delivery Gray HC13 5-1961” illustrates the Norfolk & Western’s HC13 class of covered hoppers, which were 50 Pullman-Standard produced PS-2 3215cf covered hoppers. These cars were delivered in the railroad’s classy stenciling, including the large and eye-catching “N&W” and the small spelled out “Norfolk & Western” stenciling above. The remainder of the lettering harkens to different era, when each railroad still insisted on its own road-specific stenciling for the cars. No Pullman-Standard created stencils here! The models feature a see-through Apex-style running board, “Early-style” round roof hatches, body-mounted brake gear and Enterprise gravity outlet gates. The B-end of the car features all of the brake details and piping of the prototype, including a gorgeous Universal 7400 brake stand, Universal brake wheel, Apex-style brake step, high-mounted retainer valve, wire piping details and a finely executed air release rod poking through the bottom sill on each side of the carbody. Metal corner stirrup steps and flexible rubber air hoses on each end of the car provide durability. The model rides on Tangent’s brand-new 70-Ton ASF A-3 Ride Control Roller Bearing trucks with Timken rotating bearing caps. We are pleased to offer these classy Norfolk & Western cars in 12 numbers from May of 1961. SKU 35013

– Sacramento Northern (SN) “Delivery Gray 5-1959” continues the Pullman-gray tradition, but picks up the elegant Sacramento Northern stenciling found on the cars of the era. The small data is Pullman-Standard stenciling styles. We are pleased to offer 6 numbers in this Sacramento Northern scheme. How often do you get accurate Sacramento Northern models in HO scale? SKU 35014

– Southern Pacific “Delivery Gray H-100-1 9-1959” illustrates a very cool Southern Pacific delivery paint scheme, with a significant amount of era-specific stenciling. The large Southern Pacific is spelled out with red stenciling in the railroad’s classic bold font. There is a yellow box on the side of the car that declares “Interior Treated For Edible Commodities” which indicates this is a food service car. Don’t load it with sand or cement! The models feature a see-through Apex-style running board, “Early-style” round roof hatches, body-mounted brake gear and Enterprise gravity outlet gates. The B-end of the car features all of the brake details and piping of the prototype, including a gorgeous Ajax brake stand, Ajax brake wheel, Apex-style brake step, high-mounted retainer valve, wire piping details and a finely executed air release rod poking through the bottom sill on each side of the carbody. If you look closely at that B-end, you will notice we even applied the correct box-style defect card holder for SP. Metal corner stirrup steps and flexible rubber air hoses on each end of the car provide durability. The model rides on Tangent’s 100-ton Barber S-2 Roller Bearing trucks with Timken rotating bearing caps – all of them simulated the painted trucks found on the prototype! We are pleased to offer 12 road numbers in this classy SP scheme! SKU 35015

– Chicago Great Western (CGW) “CNW Zito Repaint 10-1984” illustrates a beautiful CNW Clinton-Shops repaint of a CGW car. When they were repainted by CNW, the railroad retained the original reporting marks of these former CGW cars. CNW assumed the leases on these CGW cars when CNW acquired CGW in 1968. The model rides on Tangent’s brand-new 70-Ton ASF A-3 Ride Control Roller Bearing trucks with Timken rotating bearing caps – a favorite for PS 3215cf covered hoppers! We are pleased to offer 3 accurate road numbers in this Zito repaint scheme, providing a neat car option for our 1984+ modelers, and these cars served into the post-CNW Union Pacific era! Each of the three SKUs is road number and photo-specific with stencil data and placement. SKU 35016

– ROCK “Repaint 11-1979” illustrates a beautiful ROCK blue repaint! This former Rock Island gray car was repainted in 1979, at the tail end of the ROCK era. The Tangent models wear our beautiful ROCK blue paint and the large “THE ROCK” (underlined) stenciling, plus large ROCK logo. There is a lot going on with the stenciling here. U-1 stencil is included, as well as stacked double COTS boxes. Check out that El Reno weight stencil, too. Tangent has created this single ROCK car number 507976 based on its appearance from prototype photos. SKU 35017
