– Illinois Central (IC) “Gray Repaint 1995” offers up a great example of IC cars in the modern era. The prototypes in this group were part of a 30-car order built in September of 1977 for the Illinois Central Gulf. After the rebirth of the IC (no “G”) in 1987, the IC Centralia Shops slowly repainted freight cars in an attractive gray scheme with Roman graphics. By 1995, some of the 86’ Greenville cars were selected for repainting. The models feature End-Of-Car Cushioning and a body-mounted brake system correct for this 1977 order from Greenville. Underneath, you can spot all that brake linkage hanging down low and carefully duplicated on the model. These cars also feature the auxiliary crank arms at the top center of each door – these prototypes were delivered with this detail. The model has an accurate brake stand and modern brake wheel, along with see-through Morton-style crossover platforms. These replicas ride on 100-Ton “Low Profile” Barber S-2-A trucks and have accurate rotating “Timken” roller bearing caps. While IC lettering looks plain at first glance, careful attention is needed to execute this properly in HO for a specific 1995-era repaint. We use real prototype photos, so you can look carefully and read the “Service With Safety – Set Your Mind” safety reminders. Don’t forget to check out our prototype photos.
