Tangent Scale Models is pleased to announce our newest innovation, our 100-Ton Barber S-2 truck system, which is a first for the industry! Why? Our truck product is a multiple part, multiple option system. Each truck has 4 components: sideframe, wheelsets, roller bearing caps, and brake beams. Below are the details of the Tangent truck system components:
1. The Barber 100-Ton S-2 truck sideframe:
• We offer a superbly-detailed replica of the Barber 100-Ton S-2 design with ASF features from the Granite City, IL foundry
• It includes the proper Granite City foundry stamping and all of the other small lettering
• We were able to make this the most accurate truck in HO scale because we took painstaking measurements from the real thing
2. Wheelset options:
All three of our new wheel options have beautifully-contoured wheel faces on both the front and back sides, as well as a correct axle “diameter taper” when you view the axle from the car end or middle. Our three wheelset options serve specific purposes:
• Our RTR cars come standard with 36” “normal tread” NMRA RP-25 contour wheelsets that are blackened
• For those of you that want to change out the “normal tread” with “semi-scale” wheels for a more realistic appearance, we offer blackened 36” semi-scale wheelsets that match our factory wheels but with more realistic wheel treads
• Finally, we also offer “nickel-plated” 36” semi-scale wheels that mimic the real shiny tread of prototype wheels. Modelers will typically paint the inside “cone” of the wheel as well as the axle and back sides of the wheels, and these provide the starting point for the most “prototypical look” wheels.
3. Truck Roller bearing cap options:
• We offer rotating caps on this new truck so your railcars are more animated as they are pushed and pulled around your layout
• The roller bearing “caps” that you see on prototype railcars are oftentimes sourced from different suppliers when the railcar is new. And as cars age and defects are found on real railcars, the originally-equipped roller bearing caps are changed out. And during this changeout event, they are sometimes replaced with different brands, like Brenco or Timken, each with different detail and appearance. Why is this relevant to your modeling?
• We tooled three different bearing caps (pictures below) so you can model matching cap configurations, or model “mixes” of caps if you choose too! Additionally, our RTR cars come with the correct roller bearing caps to match the subject cars we offer (whether out of the factory or a repaint)
• We offer our roller bearing caps as standalone parts that can be purchased in packs of a dozen!

4. Brake beam options:
• Finally, the truck details are finished off with two brake beam options
• Our new 100-Ton Barber equipped trucks sold separately come standard with “standard” brake beams which are used with cars equipped with a brake cylinder and body-mounted brake linkage
• For cars equipped with truck-mounted brake cylinders, we offer truck-mounted brake beams as separately-available parts as well.
So that outlines our entire 100-Ton Barber S-2 Truck System. Some of you may be rolling your eyes, while others may be ecstatic. Either way, Tangent is innovating to make this part of our railroad models more accurate.
